“Al” Amatuzio was the very definition of the American success story. Throughout his life he had continually set the standards of business and entrepreneurial excellence, especially with his interests in synthetic lubrication technology.

It is with deep sadness to report the passing of Albert (A.J.) “Al” Amatuzio, our Founder and Former Chairman of the Board on Friday night (31 March 2017). Al lived a long (1924-2017), incredible life.

  Honoring the Life of a Legend.

The man who brought synthetic lubricants to the automotive market leaves a legacy of Innovation, Efficiency and Solutions.

Today, the company he founded carries on with Amatuzio's vision – to provide consumers with a better option, to be the best and to support the little guy. What the critics deemed unnecessary and ill-conceived when his company was founded is now required by many vehicle manufacturers. Because of Amatuzio, consumers have improved choices from Big Oil, their vehicles last longer and advanced automotive technologies that would have destroyed yesterday's motor oil are possible. Because of Amatuzio, the world is a better place.

In 1994 Al Amatuzio AMSOIL inducted into Lubricants World Hall of Fame

Al Amatuzio began conducting serious research in 1963. By 1966 he had formulated a synthetic motor oil and put it to use in vehicles in northern Minnesota. Throughout the late ’60s Amatuzio continued his research and development and sold commercially available synthetic oils under a variety of names. In 1970 he incorporated his own name into a commercially sold product called AMMOIL. In 1971 this product name was changed to AMZOIL and it continued to be sold commercially. The true milestone came in 1972 when AMZOIL became the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute criteria. The new lubricant performed like no other before it. When the first can appeared on the market in 1972, it signaled the birth of an entire industry. Shortly thereafter, AMZOIL became AMSOIL.

AMSOIL has expanded the boundaries of lubrication science and redefined the performance possibilities of engines, equipment and machinery in automotive, commercial and industrial applications since 1972.
