1972 AMSOIL became The Worlds FIRST API Approved Automotive 100% FULL Synthetic Motor Oil.
With that The Automotive Synthetic Lubricant Industry was Born.
The Highest Professional and Ethical Standards
Because in 1972 the oil was also capable of performing for 25,000-mile “extended oil change drain intervals”, and it was the right thing to do for the consumer all while maintaining and providing long-term performance, wear protection and fuel economy, keeping engines clean and deposit-free, providing cold weather starts and protecting against rust and corrosion.
1974 Mobil, the king of the oil industry, introduced it's synthetic motor oil in 1974.
Although its Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil was initially recommended for 25,000-Miles/One Year service life. Mobil just as quickly backed off to the original equipment manufacturer's standard 3,000-Mile recommended oil change drain intervals.
WHY? Simple at 3,000-mile drain intervals they can sell 3 to 5 times more oil.

1980 AMSOIL Offers 100,000-Mile and Beyond "Extended Oil Change Interval" Technology.
Expanding the boundaries of lubrication science and redefining the performance possibilities of modern machinery and engines since 1972.
1998 Corvette Specialist's Data Book said factory-filled with synthetic motor oil (Mobil 1) that lasts longer.
NOTE: In 1992 General Motors broke ground by requiring that every Corvette rolling off its assembly lines be factory-filled with synthetic motor oil (Mobil 1). Because eight Corvette engines had seized at the General Motors assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Cold weather had moved in, and the thick, hard-to-pump oil did not reach the front camshaft bearings which were destroyed by lack of lubrication. At 30 degrees, incidentally, it wasn't all that cold. It doesn't speak well for conventional oil.
The move of General Motors to synthetics, of course, was just the first of many.
Advancements in engine and transmission design are now demanding more from lubrication.

1999 According to the Automotive Service Operator - Convenient Automotive Services Institute (CASI)
In January 1999 the Convenient Automotive Services Institute (CASI) found 60 percent of the 210 articles on "extended oil change drain intervals" published in the past year have recommended "extended oil change drain intervals"; US automakers are finally beginning to recommend longer "extended oil change drain intervals"... not really... when you consider the following...
In 1997 Mr. Mike McMillan of General Motors Stated: "Extending Drain Intervals is an important issue for us. We definitely want to be the leader in Extended Drain Intervals."
YET, in the very same year of 1997... European automakers started recommending 18,000 + miles between oil change intervals and that was after a decade of 9,000-miles between oil change intervals...
Many of the same oil companies that still recommend 3,000-5,000 mile oil change intervals in the U.S. also offer and recommend 9,000-18,000 + mile oil change intervals in Europe, and have been for many years and have plans for increasing that to nearly 30,000 mile oil change intervals in the future.

2002 Valvoline claims 100,000-Mile Extended Oil Change Drain Intervals
The Valvoline Co. has introduced a heavy-duty engine oil that can extend drain intervals, it claims, as high as 100,000-Miles.
Officials acknowledge, however, that intervals for new low-emissions engines will probably be far shorter.
A 2002 March 1 news release announcing Premium Blue Extreme states that it is capable of six-figure intervals “in select engines under certain operating conditions.” Asked to specify those conditions, Director of Commercial Brands and Technical Services Bill Runkle said they were achieved by a 5W-40 oil in long-haul, coast-to-coast trips in Caterpillar C-15 and Cummins ISX engines.

2005 ExxonMobil Extends Vehicle Oil Change Drain Intervals to 15,000-Miles (2nd Time)
The highly competitive, $3.4 BILLION U.S. lubricant market has a "new" entry with the potential to upend the sales volume assumptions it has operated under for decades.
Following "two" intensive "and" secretive years of work, ExxonMobil yesterday (January 25, 2005) unveiled a "new" line of motor oils that offer “guaranteed engine protection” for change intervals of 5,000, 7,500 and 15,000 miles.

2017 Mobil 1 Annual Protection -- Guarantees 20,000-Mile Oil Change Drain Intervals
Lube Report (Lubes'n'Greases) 2017 March 15
In what could be another step in the march toward longer drain intervals, ExxonMobil on Friday (2017 March 10) announced a new engine oil that guarantees against engine damage for intervals of one year or 20,000 miles.
WHY not 25,000-Mile like they offered in 1974 and 1978?
Mobil 1 Annual Protection IS NOT the first passenger car engine oil to come with an engine warranty, but it's the longest interval offered by main lubricant marketers. According to ExxonMobil's website, the warranty covers critical engine parts lubricated by the engine oil.
If your vehicle is covered by a warranty, follow the vehicle's oil life sensor or the oil change interval recommended in your owner's manual. WHY would you want to change it before you reach the one year or 20,000-miles?
Available in 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5W-30 viscosities.
