1972 AMSOIL FIRST to develop an API-rated 100% synthetic motor oil.

1972 AMSOIL FIRST to introduce the concept of "Extended Oil Change Drain Intervals" (25,000-Miles).

  In 1972 AMSOIL synthetic motor oil became the FIRST in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute (API) automotive service requirements setting all-new standards for motor oil quality, and went a step further introducing the concept of extended oil change drain intervals (Because in 1972 the oil was also capable of performing for 25,000-mile "extended oil change drain intervals", and it was the right thing to do for the consumer all while maintaining and providing long-term performance, wear protection and fuel economy, keeping engines clean and deposit-free, providing cold weather starts and protecting against rust and corrosion). And as they say the rest is history.

With that the Automotive Synthetic Lubricant Industry was born.

1972 AMSOIL FIRST to introduce synthetic oils that legitimately contribute to improving fuel efficiency.

1973 AMSOIL FIRST to manufacture a synthetic 2-cycle oil (100:1 pre-mix).

1974 AMSOIL FIRST to manufacture synthetic gear lube for automotive use (80W-90).

1975 AMSOIL FIRST to produce synthetic motor oils for diesel engines (SE, CC, CD).

1978 AMSOIL FIRST to produce synthetic motor oils for racing engines (20W-50).

1980 AMSOIL FIRST to manufacture a synthetic automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for automotive use.

1982 AMSOIL FIRST to produce synthetic motor oils for marine engines (15W-40).

1984 AMSOIL FIRST to produce synthetic motor oils for turbo engines (10W-30).

2005 AMSOIL FIRST to manufacture a full-synthetic advanced Ultra-Fine NanoFiber Technology cartridge-style oil filter.

Al Amatuzio began conducting serious research in 1963. By 1966 he had formulated a synthetic motor oil and put it to use in vehicles in northern Minnesota. Throughout the late ’60s Amatuzio continued his research and development and sold commercially available synthetic oils under a variety of names. In 1970 he incorporated his own name into a commercially sold product called AMMOIL. In 1971 this product name was changed to AMZOIL and it continued to be sold commercially. The true milestone came in 1972 when AMZOIL became the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute criteria. The new lubricant performed like no other before it. When the first can appeared on the market in 1972, it signaled the birth of an entire industry. Shortly thereafter, AMZOIL became AMSOIL.

AMSOIL has expanded the boundaries of lubrication science and redefined the performance possibilities of engines, equipment and machinery in automotive, commercial and industrial applications since 1972.
